Pastor Leonard Killings, director of the Lee-Miles Hunger Center, knows the important role food centers hold for hardworking neighbors who are food insecure. Managing the Center has given him firsthand insight into the struggles that neighbors experience to ensure that their families are fed and their bills are paid.
Many of the neighbors he encounters have jobs, but sadly their employment isn’t enough to help them take care of their families. “The work that they are doing unfortunately is not able to sustain their livelihood,” says Pastor Killings. Even the neighbors who face unemployment are dedicated members of the community, seeking work so they don’t need to rely on the Hunger Center. “They are trying to get jobs so they can take care of their family without the assistance of this center,” he adds.
Pastor Killings tries his best to provide neighbors with not only shelf-stable pantry essentials, but nutritious food such as meats and fresh produce. It is really important to him that neighbors are given food to help them thrive. “My mother used to make sure I ate properly. And so, I like carrying on that tradition that my mother developed in me.”
With the Food Bank’s initiative to ensure 75% of distributed food is rated as nutritious, Pastor Killings is thankful for the food the Lee-Miles Hunger Center receives from the Food Bank. They also receive support from the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland.
“It’s no doubt that the Greater Cleveland Food Bank is helping me do incredible work in the Lee-Harvard area here at the Lee-Miles Hunger Center. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is doing very important work in this community,” adds Pastor Killings.
