More Than Just Food

At the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, our senior neighbors hold a special place in our hearts. Too many face impossible choices daily — medication or groceries, paying bills, or buying fresh produce.

Take Barbara from Euclid. Living on Social Security means every dollar counts. “When you’re on Social Security, you only have a certain amount that you have to spread out,” she shares. “It’s not a whole lot. So, the less money I have to spend at the grocery store, the more I can use for other things.”

Thanks to the Senior Market Program, Barbara now enjoys fresh fruits and vegetables that were once luxuries. But nutrition is just part of the story.

Through the Euclid Senior Center’s congregate meal program, Barbara can get a healthy meal without worry. This program is made possible by a grant from the Ohio Department on Aging through the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging. “It’s a nutritious meal, which is very good. We have to learn to eat to live because sometimes you just eat too much salt or too much sugar. This way it’s a balanced diet, and it helps you learn how to cook for yourself at home too.”

But she has also discovered something else that’s valuable — community. After losing her husband two years ago, these programs offer Barbara more than just meals — they provide connection and hope. “I’m just grateful for the Food Bank,” she says, “because it has been an access for me to get out of the house, mingle, and learn something.”
