Filled with Gratitude

The past few years haven’t been easy for Johnathan, who lives in an income-based senior housing complex in Cuyahoga County. Born and raised in Cleveland, the 61-year-old has a host of health issues that make it tough for him to get around. He uses a wheelchair for mobility and can’t drive.

His fixed income and modest SNAP benefits don’t stretch far enough to cover his grocery bills, especially the strict diet his doctor has suggested. “I’m a diabetic,” Johnathan says. “Plus, I have congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea.”

Johnathan’s doctor wants him eating healthier foods with less sodium and lower saturated fats in order to better manage his health issues. Often the healthier the food, the more expensive it is — and with his tight budget, it can be hard for Johnathan to access the food he needs.

Thankfully, a neighbor at his housing complex suggested the Greater Cleveland Food Bank Community Resource Center on the east side of town where he can get food. Fortunately, the bus line runs by his house and directly to our new center.

Between his SNAP benefits and the help he receives from the Food Bank, Johnathan is now able to get the fresh produce and low-sodium canned foods he needs to stretch his grocery budget. It’s all thanks to the support from our generous community!

Your kindness knows no bounds! Thank you for opening your heart during the holidays, and for helping seniors like Johnathan. We hope you’ll keep up the good work.
